What Is Behind Your Kitchen Cabinets When the Pipe Is Original Galvanized

Most kitchen remodels are planned from the front. You pick a layout, look at cabinet door styles, argue about quartz or quartzite, and choose a faucet. The back of the kitchen, the wall behind the sink base where the water comes in and goes out, barely gets discussed until the demolition crew pulls the old cabinet away from it.
In a newer Orangecrest tract home that is fine. The pipe back there is copper or PEX and it will outlast the cabinets. In a lot of older Riverside houses it is a different story. Bungalows in the Wood Streets, Spanish revival homes near Mount Rubidoux, and plenty of the ranch houses built after the war in Arlington and La Sierra were plumbed with galvanized steel, and a surprising number still have it somewhere between the meter and the kitchen tap.
This is a walk through what that means, what we actually see when the wall comes open, and how to plan a remodel so the old pipe becomes a known line item instead of a mid job surprise.
Why Galvanized Pipe Was Used, and Why It Wears Out
Galvanized pipe is ordinary steel pipe dipped in molten zinc. The zinc coating protects the steel from rust, and for decades it was a sensible, affordable choice for water supply lines. Sections were joined with threaded fittings, which a plumber could cut and thread on site.
The problem is that zinc is a sacrificial coating. It corrodes slowly in place of the steel, and eventually it is gone from the inside surface. Once that happens the steel rusts. Rust and scale build up on the interior wall of the pipe and the opening gets smaller. Hard water, which Riverside has, adds calcium and magnesium deposits to the mix. The outside of the pipe can look perfectly fine while the inside has closed down to a fraction of its original bore.
Threaded joints are the weakest points. Cutting threads removes metal, so the pipe wall at the threads is thinner than anywhere else, and that is where pinhole leaks and weeping joints tend to appear first.
Signs You Probably Have It in the Kitchen
You do not need to open a wall to get a good idea. A few things point strongly toward galvanized:
- Low flow at the kitchen faucet that has come on gradually, especially when other fixtures in the house are fine or when the hot side is slower than the cold.
- Brown or orange tinted water after the house has sat unused for a few days, which clears after running the tap.
- Gray, threaded pipe visible at the water heater, under the house, or where the hose bib leaves the exterior wall. A magnet will stick to it. It will not stick to copper.
- Old multi turn gate valves under the sink, or no valves at all.
- Aerators that clog with rust flakes, not just white mineral scale.
A house can have copper at the sink and galvanized a few feet back in the wall, because previous owners often replaced only what they could reach. So a copper stub out under the sink is not proof the kitchen branch is clean.
What We Find When the Sink Base Comes Out
Every house is different, but the same handful of conditions show up over and over when we open a kitchen wall in an older part of town.
The Restricted Branch Line
The supply pipes feeding the sink are half inch galvanized, heavily scaled inside. When we cut a section out, you can sometimes see daylight through only a narrow ring in the middle. That single finding explains years of slow faucets, and it is why a new fixture on old pipe usually disappoints.
The Thin Stub Out
The short threaded nipple coming through the wall to the angle stop is often the most corroded piece in the whole run. It has been wet on the outside from minor drips, wet inside all the time, and stressed every time someone tightened a valve against it. It is common for it to start leaking the moment it is disturbed during demolition.
The Mixed Metal Splice
Somewhere along the line a previous repair connected copper directly to galvanized steel. When two dissimilar metals touch in water, the less noble one corrodes faster. In this case that is the steel, right next to the joint. A proper dielectric union or a modern transition fitting separates them. When we find a bare copper to steel joint, we expect trouble at that spot and we usually find it.
The Drain Nobody Has Looked At
Supply lines get the attention, but older kitchens often have galvanized or cast iron drain arms too. Galvanized drain pipe scales inside just like supply pipe, and grease makes it worse. Cast iron can crack at fittings or rust through along the bottom of a horizontal run. Poor slope from years of patchwork repairs leads to slow drains that no amount of snaking fully cures.
The Missing Vent
Occasionally the kitchen sink drain was never properly vented, or a vent was cut during an earlier remodel. That shows up as gurgling and a trap that siphons dry. It needs sorting out while the wall is open.
Your Options, From Smallest to Largest
Once you know what is in the wall, there are really three paths.
Replace Only the Kitchen Branch
We trace the supply back to where it meets sound pipe and replace everything from there to the sink with PEX or type L copper, with a proper transition at the connection. New quarter turn stops go in. The drain arm is replaced if it needs it. This is the most common choice when the rest of the house has already been repiped or when the galvanized is limited to the kitchen run.
The limitation is simple. If the main line feeding the house is badly restricted galvanized, a new kitchen branch still drinks through that narrow straw upstream. Flow improves somewhat, not dramatically.
Repipe the Supply Lines Through the House
If galvanized runs through most of the house, replacing the full supply system while the kitchen is open is often good value. The kitchen wall is already exposed, the crew is already on site, and you avoid a second round of wall openings later. In plaster walled bungalows, PEX is usually the practical material because it can be fished through walls and ceilings with far fewer openings than rigid pipe.
Leave It Alone
Sometimes what we find is fine. The galvanized was replaced years ago, or only a short dead section remains. In that case we replace the one nipple that matters, close the wall and spend your budget on things you will see and use every day, like better cabinet boxes or full extension drawers. We say this plainly because it happens more often than people expect.
Sequencing a Remodel Around the Plumbing
Where the plumbing work falls in the schedule matters as much as what gets done. The normal order for a kitchen with pipe replacement looks like this:
- Early inspection. Ideally before the cabinet order, so the design can account for anything that has to move.
- Demolition. Cabinets, counters and the wall surfaces needed for access come out. The water is shut off and capped.
- Rough plumbing and electrical. New supply lines, drain and vent work, plus any new appliance circuits, GFCI protected outlets and under cabinet lighting runs.
- Rough inspection. A City of Riverside inspector looks at the work before any of it is covered.
- Walls closed and patched. Drywall or plaster repair, then primer.
- Cabinets installed and leveled.
- Countertop template, then fabrication and install. Slab lead times often set the pace of the whole job here.
- Backsplash, sink, faucet and appliances. Final connections, leak checks and final inspection.
Doing the pipe work at step three rather than after cabinets are in is the whole point. Chasing a leak through a finished backsplash and a new sink base is expensive and demoralizing.
Permits and Historic Districts
Replacing supply or drain piping inside the walls generally requires a plumbing permit and inspection in Riverside, and so does moving walls or adding circuits. The permit process is not complicated. Plans or a scope description are submitted, the permit is issued, the rough work is inspected before walls close, and a final inspection follows.
If your house is in a designated historic district, interior plumbing work is not usually what brings a project to historic review. Exterior changes are a different matter. A new roof vent penetration, a relocated window over the sink, or a new wall opening for a range hood duct can all be visible from the street. Ask the city what applies to your address before those details are designed, rather than after.
Living Without a Kitchen Sink
When the supply and drain for the kitchen are being replaced, the sink is out of service for the length of the job, not just the plumbing phase. Plan a temporary station somewhere with water: a laundry sink, a bathroom, or a folding table near a hose bib in summer. A countertop microwave, an electric kettle and a plug in cooktop cover most meals. Paper plates are worth the cost for a few weeks.
In a hot inland summer, especially with a west facing kitchen, the afternoons can be rough with the room torn apart. If you have the flexibility, starting in fall or late winter makes those weeks easier.
Budgeting Honestly
The ranges we see most often in Riverside are roughly a few hundred dollars for an inspection with the sink base removed, somewhere between about $1,800 and $4,500 for a kitchen branch repipe depending on access and wall finishes, and considerably more for a whole house supply repipe. A full kitchen remodel with plumbing brought current commonly runs from the mid tens of thousands into six figures, driven mostly by cabinets, counters and whether the sink moves.
What pushes the plumbing number up:
- Plaster walls, which take more care to open and patch than drywall.
- Tile on the sink wall that has to come off.
- Tight crawlspace or no attic access, which forces more openings.
- Drain work on top of supply work.
- Moving the sink to a different wall, which means new drain routing and venting.
What keeps it down is keeping the sink where it is. You can change almost everything else about a kitchen, including cabinet layout, island placement and appliance positions, while leaving the sink on its existing wall. The plumbing savings from that one decision are often large enough to pay for a meaningful upgrade elsewhere.
Questions Worth Asking Any Remodeler
Whoever you hire, a few questions will tell you whether the plumbing is being taken seriously:
- Will you look at the supply and drain before I order cabinets?
- What material will you use to replace galvanized, and why?
- How will you connect new pipe to any old pipe that stays?
- Is the permit and rough inspection included?
- Who patches the wall, and is that in the price?
If the answers are vague, the plumbing is probably being treated as something to deal with if it breaks. In an older house, it is better treated as part of the design.
